Magnetic particle inspection is used to detect surface and near-to-surface discontinuities in ferrous parts and weldments. A magnetic field is applied across the area and a mixture of tiny iron filings is applied in a dry or wet solution. The iron filings are magnetically drawn to discontinuities within the part, and reveal indications that otherwise might be invisible to the naked eye.

This method can be used in a variety of ways, both in the field and in the lab. The three main types of MPI are:

•Dry powder

•Wet visible

•Wet fluorescent

Magnetic particle inspection is also referred to as MPI, or MT, or by the trade name "Magnaflux".
